Corbett Brook Trail - Reopening

We had our grand re-opening of our section of the Corbett Brook Trail this morning. It was well attended by our Scouts, Cubs and Rovers, parents of 5th Fredericton, Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside, New Brunswick Council Commissioner Peter Kent, and a representative from the Fredericton Trails Coalition.

Scouter Ken McDonald started us off with a big welcome to all in attendance. Scouter Lars Woodhouse then thanked our sponsor, Loblaw, and the other organizations who have helped us along the way:
  • The City of Fredericton for their support, loan of tools, garbage pickup, and the connection to their already phenomenal trail system
  • NB Liquor — this section of trail is on their property
  • The Fredericton Area Watersheds Association for blazing the trail in the first place, in 2004
  • The Conservation Council of New Brunswick
  • Jim Goltz and Charlene Mayes
  • Fredericton Trails Coalition
Group Commissioner Jean Anne Cameron-Loi read congratulatory notes from Tim Richardson, Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick and Jim Goltz, and she offered her congratulations. Council Commissioner Peter Kent also congratulated the Scouts on their hard work.

One of our Scouts delivered an excellent speech on the timeline of the project, beginning with the vote we held when deciding on an environmental project we could complete this year, followed with an outline of the exploratory and work trips to the trail.

Mayor Brad Woodside then thanked the Scouts for their hard work on the trail and cut the ribbon. The ceremonial ribbon was the same pink flagging tape used to mark the trail, and Mayor Woodside cut it with a pocket knife. He didn't have his Scout Knife Permit, but we let him handle the pocket knife anyway :-)

Our awesome Scouts!
It was a great event, and ran smoothly thanks to Scouter Ken's diligent preparation. Global News and the Daily Gleaner also attended. Global aired this event during their 6 o'clock news tonight. Daily Gleaner article available here.
